Description:
The District Department West is one of three district departments in Borås municipality, with a population of 37000. The municipality's primary activities; childcare, schools and geriatric care are in Borås carried out by the district departments. The district department administers the section for Culture and Leisure. Example of services that Culture and Leisure provides is:
Six libraries: District West has a big selection of cultural meeting points, mainly libraries. The libraries have a lot to offer besides books, like art exhibitions, literary events, handicraft meetings, workshops of different kinds as well as senior activities and public preschool.
Five youth centres/clubs: The aim of the centres is to be drug free meeting points for adolescents. The activities at the youth centres span over all types of leisure activities. Besides the youth clubs we also work in schools, and other arenas where we can be more accessible to the youngsters. All activities involve or are on initiative of the visitors. The staff has a coaching or supportive role. The youth centres aim to be inclusive and accessible and keep up an on-going work on issues like gender, LGBT, children’s rights, racism and other grounds for discrimination. Therefore we aim to develop methods that make us aware of people of different needs and adapt the staff after this to achieve greater sense of security among our young people.
Borås was 2010 awarded the distinction “Youth Municipality of the Year” for its particular efforts and strategy to enable young people to have an influence. Since this year Borås Stad is also a member of KEKS, a network for the development of quality and competence in the field of cultural and leisure activities for young people. Target group at the various meeting points span from the new born to the elder. The staff at the meeting points is preschool teachers, librarians and youth leaders.
The city of Borås support young persons to find their way back to school or work by conducting different acitivities for individuals far from the labourmarket, both persons with an immigrant background and persons with mental and/or physical disabilities. Activities for participants are carried out together with other authoroties such as the employment office, the social insurance agency, the regional health-care and eight munitipalities within the area of Sjuhärad. A coordinated association named Sjuhärads Samordningsförbund is the owner of projects that support unemployed individuals. With support from the European Social Fund different projects for youths are therefore run parallell with ordinary activities. Activities conducted have a focus on rehabilitation with health-enhancing physical activities, as well as work preparation activities such as training in companies.
